Toes are reinforced with another thin layer, helping keep toes in place and protected from any chafing; I spent an entire afternoon walking the high-sloped paths of Scotland in a rain with a pair of mid-high Converse with reinforced mouth (don't judge, the hiking boots wouldn't fit in the suitcase to get it closed) and upon the shoes taken off at the end of the day showed no sign of any soreness or blisters.
